Hence he sings "snorting whiskey" ... when, if he weren't all f'd up, he'd know to say "drinking whisky." Of course he isn't really f'd up when he sings this. Not to that extent anyway. He sings it this way because he's likely been in this state before and/or he's umm, clever. It's a song about party life if you don't know. Oh, and coke is an upper so "he sure ain't down." And the Big Man's sax solo is maybe the best solo with any instrument in history. I live in Nor Cal and I saw Clarence at the Marin County Fair and also the at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley when he used to come to visit his mom. I think of 9/11 when I hear "Baker Street." The haunting, giant sax solo reminds me of the planes hitting the Twin Towers in those giant explosions. Or a nuclear apocalypse. Both musically and lyrically, this song is the sound of tragedy. The sounds of fear and pain, but especially fear.
